Filipino Lumpia

Traditional Filipino Lumpia is a delightful and flavorful dish that showcases the vibrant culinary heritage of the Philippines. These crispy and savory spring rolls are filled with a medley of vegetables and meat, creating a perfect balance of textures and tastes. Ingredients

  • 1 pack of Lumpia wrappers (about 25 sheets)
  • 1 pound ground pork or chicken
  • 1 cup carrots, julienned
  • 1 cup cabbage, shredded
  • 1 cup bean sprouts
  • 1 cup green beans, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking oil for frying
  • Lumpia dipping sauce (sweet chili sauce, vinegar, or banana ketchup)

Directions

  1. In a large pan or wok, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion. Sauté until fragrant and translucent.
  2. Add the ground pork or chicken to the pan and cook until browned and fully cooked, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks.
  3. Add the carrots, cabbage, green beans, and bean sprouts to the pan. Stir-fry the vegetables for a few minutes until they begin to soften.
  4. In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, and black pepper. Pour this mixture over the vegetable and meat mixture in the pan. Stir well to combine and let it cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.
  5. Take a lumpia wrapper and place it on a clean surface. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the filling onto the bottom third of the wrapper. Fold the bottom edge of the wrapper over the filling and roll it tightly once. Fold the sides inward and continue rolling until you reach the top. Seal the edge with a little water.
  6. Repeat the process until all the filling is used or desired number of lumpia are made.
  7. In a deep pan or skillet, pour enough oil for deep frying and heat it over medium-high heat. Carefully add the lumpia, a few at a time, and fry until golden brown and crispy on all sides. Remove the cooked lumpia and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  8. Serve the traditional Filipino Lumpia hot and crispy with a side of lumpia dipping sauce. Enjoy as an appetizer or a main course, and savor the delicious flavors of the Philippines!

Note: Lumpia can also be baked instead of fried for a healthier option. Preheat the oven to 400°F and place the rolled lumpia on a baking sheet. Brush them with oil and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
